Why did I just do that?

Friday’s are my favorite days of the week. Why? Because my darling wife has Fridays off.

And I take advantage of that fact by squeezing in workouts, errands or other things I normally can’t do Sunday through Thursday.

Today, considering I missed the St. George Triathlon two weeks ago, I decided to do my own triathlon just for the heck of it.

I dropped the kids off at school and got to the gym at 8:35 and was ready to dive into the pool at 8:44. I waited until 8:45 by my watch just to have a good round number to figure out what my splits and overall time was.

The 750 meters of swim was great. I used a pull buoy to neutralize my legs and focus on an arms-only effort. There was an older gentleman — I’m talking 70s — swimming in the lane next to me and I was amazed as he would sail past me about every third lap when he’d do freestyle and I would pass him on the return as he doggy-paddled it back.

It wasn’t until I looked harder that I realized he was swimming with big flippers on his feet. That made me feel a lot less bad about being passed by him

I wrapped up my 15 laps in about 17 minutes — give or take 30 seconds.

Then it was upstairs to the bike when I joined a spin class already in progress. I got my 20k (12.4 miles) done in just less than 30 minutes but tried to not make a scene of myself more than necessary by following the climbs, sprints and recovery songs along with the class - only difference is I didn’t do the recovery songs and I pushed harder than most in the room so I could get out of there faster.

I wiped the bike down, changed shoes and took off running around the 1/10th mile track at the gym. 31 laps and 26 minutes later I was done.

Throw in the horrendously long transitions because of having to go to different floors or the building, and needing to be a good patron by cleaning up my puddles of sweat, I finished the triathlon in 1 hour, 23 minutes and change.

It wasn’t a true triathlon because of the indoor swim, the pull buoy, the climate-controlled environment and the spin bike, but I’ll take the time. My SGTri time from 2007 was 1:45 so this tells me I’m at least making progress in my fitness.

How this will translate to an actual triathlon remains to be seen. Next up is the Cache Valley Tri on June 21.
