Triathlon workout — 1-26-08
Woke up for my first real day of triathlon coaching. The swim stroke analysis last week was a good starter, but today’s coaching was outstanding. I learned so much about technique and form. We spent an hour in the water but didn’t do a single stroke on our bellies.
Everything was on the back or a little on the side. And none of it involved using our arms.
That’s right, we spent an hour in the water and were asked to not use our arms for swimming. It was all about the legs, hips and shoulders today.
It wasn’t about lots of laps or yards. The coach said he could care less about how many yards we swam — he just wanted to make sure whatever yards we did, were done correctly. I think a few more of these sessions and I’ll be able to trim some serious time off the first leg of my traithlons.
I did a quick transition and ran upstairs to join a spin class a few minutes late. I probably got just 15 miles in, but I was amazed at how un-tired I was after the swim.
As I walked outside to go to my car, the blue sky, warm temps and (mostly) clean air stunned me. I felt like running right then and there, sadly I was in crappy shoes and running wasn’t an option. If the weather keeps up, I’m hitting the trail this afternoon after doing some sledding with the kids.
Check that, I hit the Cheesecake Factory with my wife instead of going for a run.
Total today: 500 meters swim, 15 miles bike.
